2017 Hyundai i30 Review

A small car that offers a rare diesel option, the Hyundai i30 lets you take advantage of better fuel economy of diesel when you're driving a little further.

From outside the 2017 Hyundai i30 looks pretty good, with cascading chrome front grille, and an artful spoiler gracing the rear. Alloy wheels are standard across the range, as are automatic dusk-sensing headlights, and the Hyundai i30 is available in 10 different colours.

Inside the 2017 Hyundai i30

The boot holds 395L, with two bag hooks and four luggage tie-down hooks to keep luggage secure. Pockets and bottle holders in the doors, plenty of cupholders and a retractable sunglasses compartment ensures loose items are conveniently stored. Folding down the rear seats gives you 1301L of storage.

The black on black colour scheme does the job, with a smattering of soft-touch materials, and supportive cloth trimmed seats completing the up-market feel of the cabin. Seven airbags contribute to the 5-star ANCAP safety rating.

In motion, the 2017 Hyundai i30 is comfortable, quiet and refined at both city and freeway speeds.

Connectivity

The 2017 Hyundai i30 features an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allowing you to mirror your phone on the display. Wireless phone charging keeps the cabin free of pesky wires, at least for Android phones. If you have an iPhone you'll need to use the 12V charging ports found in the centre console.

Bluetooth connectivity and AUX/USB/iPod input lets you stream your choice of music through the 6-speaker sound system or choose AM/FM and DAB+ radio stations.

What's it like to drive a 2017 Hyundai i30?

With a choice of engine ranging from the manual options 2.0L petrol providing 120kW and 203Nm or 1.6L turbo-diesel with 100kW/280Nm; or step up to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with 100kW/300Nm. Both engines have pulling power for 1300kg, which is unusual for a small car.

The Australian-tuned suspension gives the Hyundai i30 poise, soaking up minor bumps in the road and transferring just a quiet thud through the cabin on bigger road imperfections - a huge improvement on the driving experience of its competitors.

Extra features like rain-sensing wipers, and one-touch turn signals, as well as the quiet in the cabin, over any road surface, make driving this car a premium-level experience.

"Better equipped and better value than ever before" - Tim Robson, Cars Guide.

Who's the Hyundai i30 for?

Anyone who wants to get from A to B with minimal fuss, maximum comfort and a clear idea of what the exact cost of owning the car is going to be will find that the 2017 Hyundai i30 ticks all of these boxes. Small families, singles and commuters will find this reliable, incredibly well-featured car a comfortable everyday drive.

It's not a sports car, but the Australian tuned suspension and improved electric steering are deft and responsive.
