Mitsubishi Triton 2020 - Small Upgrades, Big Adventures

The Mitsubishi Triton 2020 comes with minor upgrades that appeal mostly to those who love the off-road lifestyle. These tweaks include the addition of a rear differential lock and rear air circulator on the GLX+ and higher trims. The dual-cab 4x4 GLS also features a new electronic locking rear differential.

The new models GLX-R and GSR 4x4 Double Cabs are also in the 2020 Triton range. Both come with advanced infotainment features.

For those who are wondering, the MY2020 model does not have the factory default that has caused the recall of 102,616 Triton units last March. The problem—incorrect installation of genuine accessory towbar wiring harness that can cause liquids to contact the electrical circuits and catch fire—only affects the 2015 to 2019 models sold in Australia from February 2015 to December 2019.

If you’re planning to upgrade your Triton, this may be the right time. Apart from the upgrades, you can also take advantage of the 150K instant asset write-off for commercial vehicles until the end of the year.

Minor styling revisions are made in the latest Triton range, including:

  • A rear differential lock to the mid-range GLX+ and GLS, a feature that’s previously exclusive on its flagship GLS Premium yet standard on most ute rivals
  • A sensor key with a push-button start but without the sports bar on all GLS models. The removal of the sports bar is in response to the feedback from most GLS buyers, who reportedly have fitted canopies or replaced the ute tub with an alloy drop-side tray.
  • Black sports bar on GLS Premium rather than an alloy finish
  • 16-inch wheels with a full-size spare on GLX+
  • 18-inch alloy wheels and LED daytime running lamps on GLS, GLX-R and GSR 4x4 Double Cabs

GLX-R and GSR 4x4 Double Cabs look sportier with their black alloy wheels, black grille and black roof. The GLX-R also gets fog lamps, chrome bumper edging, and chrome door mirrors and handles.

As for the colours, the Triton range has white and red hues as standard. Black, grey, and silver are available for an additional fee of $690.

The Interior of the Mitsubishi Triton 2020

While its interior is not segment-leading, the Mitsubishi Triton Double Cabs have a well-presented, spacious cabin with clear instrumentation and an easy-to-navigate infotainment screen. The rear seats can also comfortably accommodate three adults with its reclined seat-back angle.

  • Convenient features include the Smartphone tray and USB charging ports in the centre console for the front seat and rear-seat passengers for GLS and GSR models.
  • An array of Mitsubishi Motors Intuitive Technology (MiTEC) safety features, smartphone connectivity and interior comforts can be found on all GLS, GLX-R and GSR 4x4 Double Cabs. These include the leather-appointed heated front seats (a combination of genuine and artificial leather), two ISOFIX child seat attachments, and three top tether anchorage points.
  • An air-recirculating roof pod that redirects cool air to back seat passengers, which was previously exclusive to the GLS and GLS Premium, has been added to the GLX+.
  • Adequate incidental storage and accommodating door pockets provide plenty of storage space.

However, the car doesn't have a b-pillar mounted grab rails. Its door sleeves are also hard, which can become uncomfortable on long-journeys.

The Triton doesn't also have digital speedometer display, which is an important fitment in Australia’s speed-obsessed states and territories.

There is also no volume knob to quickly turn the audio sound up and down. To change the volume, one has to work out the tedious buttons on the infotainment screen or switch the steering wheel.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The GLX-R lacks a few elements that make its higher-spec variants more appealing, including the multi-around monitor, Super Select II 4X4, and selectable off-road modes.

On GLX+, standard inclusions include:

  • 7.0-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Bluetooth, digital radio, two USB ports
  • Fabric seat trim and single-zone climate control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Reversing camera
  • Autonomous emergency braking and lane-departure warning (optional on GLX)
  • Easy-Select 4WD that allows easy switching between 2WD and 4WD modes and provides 2H, 4H and 4L transfer case settings

Meanwhile, GLS, Toby Price and GLS Premium models are equipped with Super-Select 4WD-II offers 2H (rear-wheel drive), 4H (full-time 4WD), 4HLc (lock-up) and 4LLc (lock up in low gear) modes along with configurable driving modes off-road.

The GLS and GLS Premium also have a blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors. While all the other variants have a rear-view camera, the GLS Premium has a 360-degree camera.

However, the latest radar cruise control technology, which is standard on the Toyota HiLux and optional on the Ford Ranger, is not yet available on the Triton.

When it comes to the safety of the latest Triton line-up, nothing has been changed. It maintains its five-star ANCAP rating.

What's it like to drive a Mitsubishi Triton 2020?

When used for daily driving around town, the Triton feels quiet and comfortable, thanks to its nimble engine, smooth-shifting auto transmission, and great acceleration. The steering is generally light although there are jitters when driving on rough road and track surfaces. Its tight turning circle (11.8m arc, which is better than every other ute in the class) makes parking in busy parking lots easy.

For touring, however, the driving experience depends on which model in the range is used:

  • GLX+ and higher-spec variants provide a steady drive in very rough or slippery off-road conditions because of the rear differential lock.
  • GLS and GLS Premium can be operated in four-wheel drive on sealed roads because of their Super Select system.
  • All Triton 4x4 models can engage four-wheel drive while on the move up to 100km/h.

Overall, the ute has a smooth and consistent throttle tip-in and modulation even when driving over rocks and obstacles. The car's front and rear visions are also clear and obscured, making accidents less likely to occur.

Who’s the Mitsubishi Triton 2020 for?

With features that are “more work than play”, the Triton is undoubtedly a solid option for tradies and businessmen who need a ute that also doubles as a family runaround.

It’s a decent ute for the family, especially with its improved comfort and convenience features like the additional rear diff lock and the upgraded infotainment features and dual front, front side, full-length curtain, and driver’s knee airbag coverage that are standard on all models.

Those who are very particular about vehicle safety can also smile at Triton’s five-star ANCAP crash test rating.
