Nissan Qashqai 2015 review

The Nissan Qashqai 2015 replaced the Dualis, providing an SUV option that's street-oriented but more mature and larger than the Nissan Juke. Made in the UK, this new model features European design that will appeal to Australian families.

In our opinion, it's a huge step up from the Dualis. Here's why:

Exterior of the Nissan Qashqai 2015

The Nissan Qashqai is the sister car of the X-Trail, and you can see this at a glance. The main difference is the hatch rear end, which makes it shorter and smaller. It comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, and only weighs about 100 kilograms more than an average hatch. It's longer and lower than the Dualis was, with a balanced on-road presence.

You can opt for metallic or premium paint on any model. With a V-shaped front grille, wrap-around headlights and low profile, the Qashqai is quite a chic small SUV.

Upgrading to the Qashqai TS adds electric folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers and fog lights; while the top of the range Qashqai Ti has power windows, a panoramic glass roof and rear privacy glass, as well as roof rails, LED auto headlights and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the Nissan Qashqai 2015

The base model ST has cloth trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, manual air-conditioning for the front of the cabin. The next model up has dual zone climate control, as well as a rear centre armrest, and a more versatile cargo area, making it well worth the upgrade.

The top spec Qashqai Ti has additional safety features like a blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, and moving object detection, as well as leather seats.

There's 420 litres of boot space, with two reversible floor panels allowing you to choose from 16 different load configurations, and the tailgate opens 23 centimetres wider than the previous Dualis for easier luggage loading.

With the seats down, you can fit a Queen eurobed into the back, which is super handy for long trips if you don't want to pack a tent.

Connectivity

The base model connects you through Nissan Connect apps to Bluetooth audio, satellite navigation and traffic monitoring, and a rearview camera. Steering wheel controls mean you don't need to take your hands off the wheel.

The 7-inch touchscreen displays the around-view monitor and has six-speaker audio.

Connecting to your smartphone through the centre console, under the split-lid design you find AUX, USB and 12V plugs.

What's it like to drive a Nissan Qashqai 2015?

The Qashqai has a new electronic power steering system which contributes to great driving dynamics, with some body roll when you corner hard.

The manual ST model has good gear ratios and drives comfortably at high speeds through twisting hilly roads. The turbo-diesel does provide more torque and better fuel economy, as well as a better refinement on open roads.

Even on the larger 19-inch wheels, this SUV is remarkably stable, comfortable to drive around the city and country roads. Quality Continental tyres along with the grounded chassis help contribute to the excellent handling, giving you confidence if you swerve to avoid something. On winding roads, the Qashqai is as much fun to drive as a bigger hatch.

Who's the Nissan Qashqai 2015 for?

This is an ideal family car with plenty of space, though if you need seven seats, you'll have to step up to the more rugged Nissan X-Trail. Opting for the higher spec 'Qashqai Ti' model gives you dual zone air conditioning, making the back seats a lot more comfortable.

The 2015 Qashqai represents exceptional value for money as a small family SUV that's the largest in the segment. It's a great pick for a family who's staying on-road and will appreciate the versatility and space inside.
