Hyundai Tucson 2015 review

Replacing the ix35 in 2015, the Hyundai Tucson is a slightly larger, brand new five-passenger compact crossover SUV, available at three equipment levels.

Balancing space and practicality, the Tucson is arguably the best looking medium SUV for 2015.

Exterior of the Hyundai Tucson 2015

The best looking option for a mid-SUV of this year, the metallic look of the Hyundai Tucson is modelled on the larger Santa Fe. It's larger than the outgoing ix35, which was classed as a small SUV, and is categorised as a medium SUV.

"It's the first Hyundai to get an exterior design overseen by Peter Schreyer, the man credited with changing the look of sister brand Kia" - Richard Blackburn, Cars Guide

At just 447 centimetres long, the Hyundai Tucson is easy to park for a medium SUV.

Inside the Hyundai Tucson 2015

Good quality interior surfaces are complemented with heated and cooled front seats. It's the only model in the class with air vents for the rear seats. The front and back seats are comfortable and supportive, with plenty of legroom and a multi-tier reclining backrest for backseat passengers.

With boot space at 488 litres, there's enough capacity for most family trips and weekend activities, though not as much space for cargo as the RAV4 or Forester. Folding the seats gives you 1478 litres in total to move a larger load.

Power windows and mirrors, dual-zone climate control and an electrically adjusting driver's seat, and optional sunroof ensure that the occupants find optimal comfort for the ride.

Connectivity

An easy to use 8-inch touchscreen displays the rearview camera, USB/AUX input, satellite navigation and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming. On the South Korean base model ActiveX, you'll get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the higher spec Elite and Highlander models, manufactured in the Czech Republic don't have phone mirroring yet.

There's also a dedicated display for the driver on a 4.2-inch screen behind the steering wheel.

What's it like to drive a Hyundai Tucson 2015?

The Hyundai Tucson rides and handles beautifully, on roads from smooth, flat highways to twisting mountain routes, comfortably navigating even gravel and snow. The Elite and Highlander models are all-wheel-drive, increasing the stability on wet surfaces.

Made in South Korea, the suspension is designed and tuned here in Australia, and it really shows in the smooth ride quality over potholes and the rough Australian roads.

The engine delivers power smoothly from the low rev range up, with cruise control making long drives that little bit more comfortable. The electric steering is well calibrated, weighted nicely and responsive, offering good feedback to the driver. The Hyundai Tucson's stiff body handles quite enthusiastically, which is unusual for such a large car.

With a towing capacity just under the segment best, you can pull 1600kg with a braked trailer.

Who's the Hyundai Tucson 2015 for?

Reasonably priced and packed with features, the Hyundai Tucson is the medium SUV of choice for an active, modern family. Now available for secondhand purchase, the Hyundai Tucson makes a sensible choice for families driving mostly on the road and looking for technology and safety that meets the latest standards.
