Ford Ranger Raptor review

This exceptional vehicle can be seen as Ford’s answer to the performance double cab ute. It’s smaller than the F-150 Raptor yet an utterly unique product created primarily in Australia.

Here are some of the key stats you’ll need thinking about buying the Ranger Raptor:

Engine: 2.0L four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, producing 157kW power and 500Nm of torque.

Length: 5,389mm
Width: 2,180mm (with mirrors)
Height: 1,873mm
Mass: 2,404kg
0-100km/h: 10.4 seconds

Exterior of the Ford Ranger Raptor

The Ranger Raptor has a bold new grille with a design familiar to the F-150 Raptor, that of a top of the range high-performance off-road truck. The FORD lettering is easy to make out in the centre of the grille (unless it’s covered with mud and dust from some serious off-roading).

Ford Ranger Raptor 2018 Exterior

There are projection beam headlights and the sleek black bumper connected to the black fender for a smooth overall design. Black accented wheels and a Baja style rear bumper completes the look. Heavy duty side steps allow easy access and there’s an integrated tow bar.

Interior of the Ford Ranger Raptor

Although the design has been criticised for its slightly lower than luxury feel, there’s no doubt an element of comfort here. The seats have been specifically designed for off-roading and there’s extra grip thanks to the technical suede material. There’s also dual zone climate control for extreme temperatures.

Connectivity in the Ford Ranger Raptor

Stay connected whether you’re off road or driving around town. The touch screen system works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s Satellite Navigation, DAB Digital Radio played through 6 speakers, and a unique start up display on Cluster and SYNC screens. There’s also voice recognition for ease when driving.

What it’s like to drive the Raptor

Few people will test the Ranger Raptor to its full capabilities—leaving the ground and crashing back down to earth with a soft and cushioned landing. It has an impressive 283mm of ground clearance. But it's still a highly satisfying drive even if you don't push it to the extreme.

Ford Ranger Raptor in Action

The Four Wheel Drive System is amongst the best you’ll experience with a set of BF Goodrich all terrain tyres measuring 285mm wide at the rear with a 70 profile. There’s an easy switch to take you between two and four wheel drive. The vehicle has a variety of drive programs for both on and off road use—adjusting traction and stability controls accordingly.

Who’s the Raptor for?

There’s no denying this is suited to those with a love of off road driving looking for an adrenaline burst as they stretch its features to the maximum. However, the vehicle lends itself well to standard driving for those who simply enjoy larger vehicles. With a 5 star ANCAP safety rating, you can rest assured it’s a safe bet.
