Mazda CX-5 Akera 2017 review

This competitive five-door SUV wagon has been the best selling family car in Australia for the last few years. Find out here what you can expect from the 2017 model Mazda CX-5 Akera.

Exterior of the Mazda CX-5 Akera 2017

Adaptive LED headlights and rear LED lights are brighter and last longer than conventional halogen globes and are adjusted to illuminate dark corners. Windows are tinted to protect passengers from the sun, and a sunroof providing natural light for passengers.

On-demand AWD means that a sensor-based predictive system sends most of the engine power to the front wheels, optimising fuel economy until the sensors anticipate slipping when power is directed to the rear wheels.

The rear tailgate is powered, and you can choose from six colours, with two more options costing an extra $300.

Inside the Mazda CX-5 Akera 2017

The interior of the Mazda CX-5 Akera, at the top of the CX-5 range, features white or black perforated-leather trim and a sunroof. Combined with a wood-effect dashboard, the result is charming and sophisticated.

Rear passengers can charge devices using a USB outlet at the centre armrest, and enjoy dual-zone climate control. There's also a flip-up glass panel at the top of the dashboard to position a digital speedo in the line of sight of the driver. The front seats are both heated, and the driver's seat is power-adjustable and will remember the settings matched to your key.

Rear seats are adjustable too, to optimally position child seats or provide comfort over longer distances. There are some road and wind noise in the 2017 Mazda CX-5 Akera; this was unexpected as it has been solved for the new CX-9.

Luggage space is ample, with 442 litres of boot space and a luggage cover which attaches to the tailgate and rises when you open the boot. For a low garage roof or shorter driver, you can set the maximum opening height within reach.

Connectivity

The Akera comes with a 249 watt Bose amplifier and 10 speakers, streaming sound from the 7-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system.

With internet radio, Stitcher and Aha, DAB+ and AM/FM, AUX, Bluetooth hands-free capability, and USB input, there's plenty of listening choice. There's also sat-nav, and steering wheel mounted audio controls for easy operation while driving.

What's it like to drive a Mazda CX-5 Akera 2017?

The Akera comes with a lower profile tyre than the rest of the CX-5 range, so there's a bit less ride cushioning. The steering is accurate without being overly sensitive, and the lower profile adds precision to the Akera's feel.

For a medium SUV, the Mazda CX-5 Akera is one of the more enjoyable drives, with a slightly wider wheel span and lower roofline improving cornering over the 2016 model. G-vectoring control is imperceptible, yet the CX-5 Akera handles well through winding roads.

Speed sign recognition is still a little hit and miss, so don't rely on it. You can tow up to 1800kg, enough for most family uses.

Who's the Mazda CX-5 Akera 2017 for?

With generous rear seat legroom, the Akera is good for families with growing teenagers. It's a solid, reliable family car that holds its own among stiff competition.
