Mitsubishi Triton 2015 review

The Mitsubishi Triton is designed to fill the quintessential Australian need for a workhorse that doubles as a family car on weekends. It's sitting in a competitive market, so how does the 2015 Triton measure up?

This review will focus on the dual cab option, though there is a 'Club Cab' model with two folding seats available too.

The 2015 Mitsubishi Triton is built on a totally new platform, the first full refresh for a decade. The body is stronger, earning a 5 star ANCAP safety rating. It's more aerodynamic, outstripping its competition on the highway for speed and fuel efficiency. It's also about 100 kilograms lighter than the rest of the class, which also boosts fuel efficiency.

Adding to the freeway confidence are the highly effective high-intensity headlights, which allow you to confidently maintain your speed at night, complemented for daytime with L-shaped running lights for visibility.

The wheels have a unique design that's capable off-road, but the flat alloy sections could scratch on rocks, ruts and other obstacles.

It's also got a decent turning circle of just 11.8 metres, tiny for a vehicle of this size. This is because the distance from the front to rear wheels is smaller. The timing belt has been replaced by a timing chain, reducing maintenance for first and second owners.

Standard colours were white and red, other colours came at an additional cost.

Inside the Mitsubishi Triton 2015

The driver can get comfortable with tilt and reach the adjustable steering wheel, and the seat can be adjusted to move the back forwards as well as tilting, you can also raise or lower the seat base. The footrest has enough space to accommodate work boots.

With seven airbags, including curtain airbags for rear occupants, safety is excellent.

The shorter wheelbase does mean that you can't load as much into the tray, with almost 1.3 metres of the tub sitting behind the wheel axle. Total payload is 640 kilograms including passengers.

Connectivity

There's an AM/FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio streaming, voice control and iPod connectivity, and six speakers, but only one USB port. The GLS and Exceed models don't have a CD player.

The higher spec models offer excellent smartphone integration and the reversing camera displays on the 6.1-inch or larger touchscreen. Controls on the steering wheel operate the phone and sound system.

What's it like to drive a Mitsubishi Triton 2015?

If you were doing a lot of highway driving, you might replace the tyres with wider ones to absorb some of the roughness of the suspension.

There's also electronic stability control, electronic traction control to assist with skid and driving on slippery surfaces. Trailer sway control stabilises the car if the trailer moves sideways.

The Triton GLS has a 'super-select' transmission, allowing you to adjust the drive mode depending on the surface. For normal driving, you're in 4H, or all-wheel-drive. 4H-LC is for dirt roads above 30km/h, it locks the centre differential to increase traction. 4L-LC is the same with lower ratios for slower speeds. 2H is two-wheel drive, there are not many uses for this unless you want to save a little fuel at high speed on the highway. Never use 2H in the wet or on dirt roads.

Both manual and automatic have reliable traction control, and towing capacity is 3,100 kilograms.

Who's the Mitsubishi Triton 2015 for?

The Mitsubishi Triton is a better choice of 'light commercial' ute if you're more city-oriented, because of its lighter, more engaging, and easier to manoeuvre than the other dual cab options in the class.

With excellent safety features, if the load and towing capacity are sufficient for your working week, this makes an excellent choice to double as a family car on weekends. There's a five year, 100,000 kilometre warranty, so if you buy second hand in 2018, you still have two years left under the warranty.
